back to community garden page

2008 season

Here's how it began...

A lot of hard labor went into the beginning of our community garden. First the old basketball court had to be removed. Then the rocks had to go. Crystal Coffey-Avey and her crew did a great job. But there were a lot of rocks.

Roe Construction did some rock sifting so we could have a rock-free planting area. Thank you!

Arbor Day, April 25, 2008
We planted two pear trees and a plum tree...while the hail fell.

Dale Arlian removed the rocks from the area. Thanks, Dale!

A lot of hard work went into digging posts for the fence. Mike Rennie deserves special recognition, but he had help from April, Diana, Erika, Grant, Janice, Kathie, Lawson, Reese, Shirley, and Yazzy. Thanks to all!

Some "Marines" who were playing nearby came to the rescue to help Mike Rennie and some other folks finish the fence. Looking like you were just standing around was actually a crucial part of holding the wire in place.

The way it was in June.

The children's gardens were looking good, too.

The garden in early July.

Wow! The garden was really lush at the end of July. Some folks were almost ready to harvest.

Gardeners were excited about the upcoming harvest. Some were already enjoying the bounty.

On August 28 gardeners met for an end-of-season celebratory potluck. The growing contest came first, with Francis Blake measuring and Sandi Blake awarding prizes. Among winners were a huge jack-o-lantern pumpkin and melons, which though minuscule (hardly bigger than golf balls) were the only ones in the garden and hence the largest. The garden-grown food was terrific. Even the local newspaper editor came to enjoy the fun.

The end of an abundant year.
